Säben Abbey

Säben is the spiritual cradle of the entire Tyrol region and one of its oldest monuments. Around the year 1000 the bishopric was moved from Säben to Brixen. Until then, the Holy Cross Church was the cathedral of the bishopric Säben for about 400 years.

Klausen - The City of artists

Here, where the city was the scene of intense artistic activity just a hundred years ago, is where the famous artist Albrecht Dürer stopped during his journey through Italy. He exploited his portrait of the city as a background for an allegorical copper-plate engraving titled “Nemesis – The great fortune“. Today, Klausen is still numbered among the most-beautiful of Italy’s ancient cities: Its tower-studded facades, its wide alcove balconies, and the picturesque signs of its old inns and pubs were all that was needed to convince the club “I borghi più belli d´Italia” of its worthiness.

THE PROMENADE OF KLAUSEN

The promenade with its lovingly designed front gardens and narrow colorful houses invites you to stroll and walk directly from the city center.

gassltörggelen

When autumn begins in the southern Valle Isarco/Eisacktal, it starts also the so-called Törggele-season. The city Klausen celebrates the beginning of this ancient tradition with a big festival. On three saturdays, the artist’s city dedicates itself entirely to the traditions of the “Törggelen” and transforms itself into some kind of outdoor tavern. Through the streets of the town, gastronomic stands offer various South Tyrolean specialties, such as „Knödel“, „Schlutzkrapfen“, sausages with sauerkraut (fermented cabbage), doughnuts, „Strauben“ and roasted chestnuts.

dürerstein klausen

One wrote the year 1494 as the young artist ALBRECHT DÜRER made a stop in Klausen during his Italy journey. Today a beautiful walk leads to these slopes from Klausen. From this promising place the painter drew the city of Klausen. The result of its feather was lost later, but a copper engraving of it has been preserved in the artwork „Nemesis – The great fortune“. Klausen calls itself also the Small Dürer Town. Who wants to visit this place, goes today to the Dürerstein.

MEDIEVAL CHRISTMAS

The romantic old town of Klausen offers a natural backdrop, a fairy-tale setting where fir trees line up one next to the other. In some corners, time simply seems to stand still. The charm of bygone times flows from all corners, where old farming tools, rustic objects and natural Christmas decorations attract the attention of visitors. Hundreds of candles are lit in the streets drawing delicate shadows on the historic facades of the village. The magical, almost fairy-tale Christmas atmosphere rekindles childhood memories and warms the hearts. The sounds of the accordion caress the ears, alpine horns sing ancient Advent music.
